Trans-Labrador Highway

Summer 2003

In the summer of 2003 we spent a couple of days on the north shore of the Strait of Belle Isle, in Labrador and Quebec. One reaches this area by taking a ferry from St. Barbe in Newfoundland to Blanc Sablon on the north shore, which is actually in Quebec. This was part of our July-August trip to Newfoundland and Labrador.

For the Newfoundland section of this trip, please visit the Leatherwood Trail website, Newfoundland section.

From Blanc Sablon one can drive east in Quebec to Vieux Forte (70 km), and west in Labrador to Red Bay (85 km). From Red Bay one can now drive north all the way to Cartwright (315 km further).

From Cartwright it is only a short journey to Goose Bay via another ferry. There are plans to join Cartwright and Goose Bay by road in a few years.

If you are planning to visit this area, please see the South Labrador section of this website.

Here is a map of South Labrador
east and north from Blanc Sablon,

And here's a map of the Quebec part, west from Blanc Sablon to Vieux Forte
